Box Canyon. It's a historic site along some old wagon
trail or mail route or somethin'.
I'm not sure I fully understand this place. There is a well worn trail
on the hill above this canyon that was the original trail. Then in 1847
along comes the Mormon Battalion and hacks out enough of the rock walls
to fit their wagons through and it becomes the first wagon road into
So Cal. That's all according to THIS
WEB PAGE anyway.
My problem with that lies in the fact that while the rest of the canyon
looks like a nice respectable wagon trail...all of a sudden you come
to the fifteen foot of near vertical rock pictured below. How the hell
you get a wagon up that? Down it maybe if you put blinders on your horses,
but definitely not up it.
I guess flash floods over the last 150 years have taken there toll on
this place.
